I have a project to create a simple inventory management system which should be able to read a barcode with a scanner and have it update a database with the current stock of items. I have in front of me a Wasp wcs3905 usb scanner but it's pretty useless as far as data management. What is the min mobile scanner that would work for my application? Also a barcode printer would be a nice addition, and I am assuming a software to track everything. I have a little system setup right now where I punch in some data about the item, that data gets translated into a barcode, I print it out, and then once scanned all it does is read the barcode and input that data back into text. To primitive for my liking as it stands. Goal: While using a handheld scanner, be able to go around the office and scan important assets and have their inventory be updated in a excel spreadsheet/ database on the network. I've been running into the same issues. I started going through different templates that were available for Microsoft Access and was able to customize it for my use. Was kind of complicated originally, but is working out ok right now. Attached is a link file for the database. It contains sample data. There are several resources here and around the internet if you aren't familiar with Access. I am trying to get my Spiceworks level up a little higher so I can place a feature request for Asset Tracking, since Spiceworks already inventories the network devices for us! If there is anything else I can help you with just let me know! I'm having some trouble understanding what you're trying to achieve here. ID: 380-05-22. How I'm reading it: You want to have information about an item, create a barcode that 'stores' that information, then when you scan that barcode automatically update a spreadsheet or database. Is there a reason that you can't use Spiceworks? A lot of what you're describing is the exact functionality built in. I noticed that you put simple and Spiceworks may be a little more complex than what you need. But as an inventory management app alone it can be super powerful. Instead of updating a separate DB or spreadsheet, just create a custom group and build a report off of that. Need it in a spreadsheet? Export to Excel or CSV. I'd think that even if you created manual assets for things that SW can't scan it would be an easy way to track. Many people have set their Spiceworks up to label equipment with a QRcode and then scan it with a smart phone. Maybe I'm misinterpreting what you're asking, if so I'm sorry. Please explain more.. I have an excel spreadsheet that lists the inventory number, make, model, serial number, MAC address (if applicable), last known hostname, building location, room location, order information (if I need to do an RMA). My inventory tags say 'Property of Company X', with the inventory number and a barcode (of that inventory number). I thought I might make use of a barcode reader, but I never ended up actually buying one, since the only information the barcode contains is the inventory number, which I can read on the tag anyway. For software inventory, I list the developer, the name of the software, version, license key, number of total licenses available, and purchase information. If I need specs, warranty information, installed software, I look at spiceworks. Hey Josh, Check out from Wasp. It does exactly what you are describing here, with a simple but flexible interface. It compliments systems like Spiceworks, it’s not a replacement for software that scans the network and gathers info from the machines. It uses physical location tracking based on the asset’s unique ID (the barcode) and has a check-out/check-in feature like a library system to track ownership. It also has a date/time stamp for when an asset is ‘due back’ for machines that have temporary ownership. Basically, it can track all of the info discussed here, and more if you need it. The interface is simple, and you don’t have to use features you don’t want to use. Much better than creating a new database from scratch, and you can use USB scanners like the Wasp one you have, or mobile hand held computers like these. > Why You Must Use These Templates?
